The Biggest Risk With Internet-Based Business Opportunities

The primary risk with Internet-based business opportunities might surprise you. It's not the risk you'll be deceived by "too-good-to-be-true" promises. Nor is it that you'll lose a lot of money with your Internet-based business opportunity.

The primary risk is underestimating the amount of work required.

What's Not at Risk?

Many entrepreneurs who evaluate online business opportunities fear getting "taken in." You don't need to fear it, you need to be aware of the possibility. If you do get deceived by an Internet-based opportunity, the fault is likely yours.

One strength of the Web is that even though it's worldwide, there's no place to hide. You can easily find out if an online opportunity is likely to deceive you with false promises. Just plug the name of the business into a search engine along with the word "scam."  You might get lots of hits.

The challenge will be discerning who has legitimate complaints against the business and who is just grinding a personal ax.

Similarly, the only way to lose too much money with an Internet-based opportunity is to affiliate with one that demands a lot of money upfront.

There are literally hundreds of online opportunities with no or low start-up costs. A good rule of thumb from James Halm, a frequent writer on Internet-based businesses, is this: If the Internet opportunity requires more than $500 to get started, beware.

Internet Success Requires Work

The real risk in starting or joining an Internet-based business is to go in thinking it will be easy money. One thing I can guarantee, it won't be easy. Don't believe me? Onlinegeeks.com writes about Internet-based opportunities, and they say, "Starting and operating an internet business is surprisingly similar to operating any other business."

If you don't like your current job, it's risky to believe an Internet-based business offers an easy way out. Common sense will tell you it doesn't. Even the perfect online business requires you to work 2 jobs—your own and the Internet opportunity—until you generate enough income to be financially able to quit your day job.

So, it is vital that you actually like the nuts-and-bolts effort required by your Internet-based business. Otherwise, you'll end up back where you started: doing something you don't like.

Reducing the Risk

The easiest way to reduce this risk of Internet-based opportunities is to choose something you truly have a passion for. If you are going into affiliate marketing as your Internet business, you will need to participate in all manner of online communities related to your product. You'll be telling as many people about it as you can. So it must be something that you are able to communicate knowledgeably about and that you enjoy talking about.

An Internet-based business opportunity can be the key to exciting work you enjoy and that will provide ample financial reward. But don't underestimate the risk of lightly approaching any Internet business opportunity. All of them require work. Know that going in and choose work you enjoy.
